Speaker: Annie Legomsky, leader, Holistic Defense Services, Missouri State Public Defender System

Annie Legomsky will describe how she saw an urgent need to tackle the root causes of people entering the criminal legal system and help break the cycle of criminalization. Her foresight resulted in statewide Holistic Defense Services. Realizing that systemic change flows out of demonstrated results, Legomsky and her team focused on providing holistic services to people in the pretrial stage of their cases and those at risk of having their probation revoked.

Legomsky draws on her experience as a public defender and social worker to motivate staff and AmeriCorps volunteers, who step into communities and engage with local service providers to connect clients to essential resources. By collaborating with the pretrial detainee’s public defender, the program helps get clients out of jail and back to their families and communities while they await trial. The clients’ powerful stories of change and resilience help attorneys humanize them to get the best outcome possible and to demonstrate that given a fair chance,  people can change, and systems can evolve to become more just and more compassionate. Legomsky will let us know how we can help expand the reach of this important work.
